Chapter Twenty-One
Zylahâs steps would have felt a little lighter the next morning as she accompanied Nye to training, had it not been for the pain simmering beneath her skin. Sheâd avoided Holt the day before because she knew heâd have taken one look at her and known. Instead, sheâd added some of the baylock leaves to her morning tea, but alone, the relief it provided was minimal. Enough that she could move without stumbling, but inside, gods. She was on fire. And she welcomed it.
Sheâd had plenty of time to think, the pain keeping her awake throughout the night. Just taking out Marcus was no longer an option, not with everything heâd created. Whatever vampires and thralls remained needed to be stopped, along with the vanquicite mine. At least he was posing as a human, ruling as one of them. Zylah didnât dwell on how badly things would go for the future of both humans and Fae if Marcus revealed he was one of them. When he revealed it.
Nye was halfway through inviting Zylah to dinner that evening as they reached the doors to the training balcony, the sound of whoops and cheers carrying through them. The Fae rolled her eyes. âKej,â she muttered, but not unkindly, pushing open the doors to the frigid air.
A large group of soldiers had gathered in a circle, blocking whoever was fighting from view.
But Zylah knew.
Could feel the way the air changed, thickened wherever he went, as if his magic fed on the atmosphere around him. Holt. She hadnât properly caught up with him since he and Malok had intervened with the three Fae. Since Zylah had stopped Malok from being poisoned. She hadnât filled him in about Nye researching the book, either.
âIs that all youâve got?â Kejâs voice carried over the cheering, and Zylah followed Nye as the crowd stepped aside for her.
Her cousin rolled to his feet, one eye purple and swollen, his bare chest slick with sweat.
A quiet laugh rumbled somewhere in front of him, but Zylah and Nye still hadnât quite made it through the throng. Zylah felt certain some of the soldiers whispered to each other as she passed, could have sworn one of them hissed half Fae under their breath, but she kept her head forward, didnât give them the satisfaction of seeing a response.
âAlways with the dick-swinging contests,â Rin muttered beside them as they reached her at the front of the crowd.
âItâs his coping mechanism. Let him have it,â Nye said with an almost shrug.
Zylahâs gaze fell on Holt as he ran a hand through his hair, dragging it out of his eyes. The movement flexed every muscle in his arm and down his sculpted torso, his shirt discarded somewhere at the edge of their makeshift ring.
Like Kej, he had strips of cloth wrapped around his knuckles, the fabric of his right hand stained rusty from Kejâs blood.
Her attention slowly lifted to Holtâs split lip and then higher, his eyes meeting hers as if heâd caught her watching.
